Learn the Rules of Portrait Photography with James Barry.

James Barry (c) 2004

If you would like to know how to improve your photographic skills or are thinking of a career in portrait photography then why not take a short course with James Barry and learn the techniques to take better pictures.

There are certain rules for portrait photography, which if you stick to can create stunning images. If you are aiming to be a professional portrait photographer these rules are a discipline and while you may chose to break them on occasions you need to understand when to cross this line. If you are entering images in competitions or for professional qualifications, you will find judges will mark you down if these basic rules are broken.

The course includes:

  • A mix of theory and practical lessons.
  • An introduction to studio lighting techniques.
  • Learn the rules of portrait photography.
  • Learn how to set up a studio.
  • Learn how to use a light meter.
  • Learn how to use a tethered digital camera with a computer.
  • Learn how to pose and position a model.
  • Free use of studio from 5p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • You will receive a hand-out which covers the 1 day course. It includes information, diagrams, examples and space to write your own notes.

Schedule

The course starts at 9.30 a.m. and finishes at 5 p.m., there will be breaks during the day including a lunch break at 12.30 p.m. Drinks will be available throughout the day, but food is not provided. However, there are several places in close proximity to the studio where food can be purchased. After the course finishes, at 5 p.m. students have free use of the studio until 9 p.m., to practice the techniques they have learnt throughout the day and to take images for their own portfolio. Please bring your own camera with you (film or digital).

The nose rule

An example of these rules is one concerning the nose. A models head must not be turned so side-ways that the profile of the nose breaks the line made by the creek. In the example here, the rule is not broken because you can just see the some of her creek passed the nose. If her head had been turned just a little more, the rule would have been broken.

F.A.Q.s

Are the rules just for a studio? These rules apply to any form of portraiture. A studio just gives us more control over lighting and background.

Does this cramp creativity? No, but there are times the break the rules, but you should know when you are doing it.

Are the rules different for film and digital? No, other aspects of photography do change, but not portrait rules.

Do you provide any documentation on these rules? Yes you will get a handout with examples, text and space to write your own notes.

Can I see your work? There are many more examples of James's work on this web site.
